What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a low-impact, full-body workout done on a specialised machine called a reformer. It uses a system of springs and pulleys to provide resistance, helping you strengthen your core, improve flexibility, and enhance your balance. It's an incredibly effective way to build strength without putting stress on your joints.

Why is Reformer Pilates ideal for someone over 40?

Many of our clients find that high-impact workouts become difficult after 40. Reformer Pilates offers a safe and effective alternative. It's fantastic for improving posture, supporting joint health, and helping to alleviate common issues like back stiffness. Our classes are designed to help you maintain an active, mobile lifestyle for years to come—whether that means playing with the grandkids or enjoying a long walk through Kilkenny.

I've never done Pilates before and feel a bit unsure. Is this for me?

Yes, absolutely! We understand that the reformer machine can look a bit daunting at first, but it's actually designed to be incredibly supportive. Our instructors are experts at guiding you through every movement, and the spring resistance can be adjusted to suit your individual needs and strength level. We offer beginner-friendly classes that focus on the basics, making it the perfect starting point. You'll feel comfortable and confident after a couple of classes!

Where is Kilkenny Pilates located in Kilkenny?

We are located in a quiet spot at street level—just a two-minute walk from bustling High Street in the heart of medieval Kilkenny City. Finding us is simple: put "Kilkenny Pilates" into Google Maps or use our eircode R95 DEC4. And don't worry, there are no stairs to climb!

Which system do you use to book classes?

We use Wunderbook, a booking system developed by a small Irish company. While it might not be one of the big, well-known systems, we absolutely love how easy it is to use. Plus, it's a wonderful way for us to support a local Irish business!

Why are there more Explore and Evolve classes on the timetable than Elevate?

We focus on building a strong foundation, which is why you'll see more Explore (beginner) and Evolve (intermediate) classes on our schedule. Our main goal is to welcome people who are new to Pilates and help them get started on their journey.

For many of our clients, the Evolve classes offer the perfect amount of challenge and a satisfying workout. We believe that Pilates is a practice for everyone, and not everyone will need or want to reach the most advanced Elevate level—and that's perfectly okay!

Check out our current timetable here. Changes will be made based on your feedback!

We're here to provide a welcoming, beginner-friendly space where everyone can find the right class for their body and their goals.

How much is it to take a reformer class at Kilkenny Pilates?

We have a simple pricing structure based on class credits and a generous 3 month validity period (as despite your best intentions sometimes things come up and you can't fit in all your classes in just four weeks).

Do you have a new client introductory offer?

Yes we do! Your first three semi-private classes are just 49 euro. Click here to avail of this attractive offer using our booking system Wunderbook.

How do I book a class?

Booking is easy with our simplified booking system. If you have any issues with booking, please contact us through this form and we will be happy to help!

I have some difficulty getting down on a reformer. Do you offer chair-based classes?

Yes, we do!

We offer a class specially tailored for over 55's on Wednesdays who want to improve their strength and mobility from a seated position.

We combine yoga and Pilates exercises in this 50 minute class incorporating some small props.

I've recently had a baby. When can I start back at reformer Pilates?

For your safety and proper recovery, we recommend waiting until you've received the all-clear from your doctor or women's health physiotherapist.

Generally, this is 8 weeks for a vaginal delivery and 12 weeks for a caesarean section.

What should I wear and bring to my first class?

Just wear comfortable, form-fitting workout clothes that allow you to move freely. For safety and hygiene, we require grip socks on the reformer. You can bring your own, or we have them available for purchase at the studio. A water bottle is also a good idea!

What if I have a pre-existing injury or a health condition?

If you have any injuries or health concerns, we recommend getting approval from your doctor or physiotherapist before starting. Please email us on info@kilkenny-pilates.com to let us know about your injury ahead of coming to the studio so that we can offer you modifications  and can ensure you have a safe and effective workout.

What's the difference between a group class and a private session?

Our group classes are small (max 4 people) to ensure you still get plenty of individual attention while enjoying the energy of a group. They offer excellent value for money.

Our private sessions offer a completely tailored program designed specifically for your personal goals and needs, giving you one-on-one attention from your instructor.

Can I attend a Mixed Level class if I'm new to Pilates?

Mixed Level is not suitable for someone entirely new to reformer Pilates. The right place to start is with an Explore class (or sign up for our Wednesday evening Explore 6-week course). We suggest you do at least 4 Explore classes before attending a Mixed Level class where the pace will be faster and the moves more challenging.

What's the difference between Pilates and yoga?

I'm certified in both Pilates and yoga and while they have some aspects in common they are very different! Please check out this blog post for a detailed explanation. And if you'd like to dive even deeper, check out this one.

How often should I come?

To see the best results, we recommend attending 2-3 classes per week. However, even one class a week will make a noticeable difference in your strength and flexibility. Consistency is key!

What's your cancellation policy?

We have a 24-hour cancellation policy for all classes. If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged for the class. This policy helps ensure that everyone has a fair chance to book a spot, as our classes are so small and often fill up.

Who is the lead instructor at Kilkenny Pilates?

Our lead instructor is Miriam. She has completed in-person training in yoga in Dublin, Boston, and Nepal. For Pilates, her in-person training includes Cork-based MaxPhysio and the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI). These diverse training experiences ensure you receive expert instruction focused on safe and effective movement.
